Background: Exercise capacity declines with age and is thought to be related to the changes in cardiopulmonary function. The objective of our study was to evaluate the decline in exercise capacity with aging, and to find out which cardiopulmonary factors are related to the decline in exercise capacity with aging.
Materials and Methods: Seventy adults without past history or present symptom/signs of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease were enrolled. Transthoracic echocardiography, resting pulmonary function tests, and exercise testing were performed to measure various indices of cardiopulmonary function.
Results: There were significant correlations between LV mass, E velocity, A velocity, F/A ratio and increasing age. Of the indices measured from resting PFT and exercise testing, residual volume(RV) and RV/total lung capacity(TLC), and exercise capacity(METs) were significantly correlated with increasing age. Indices that had significant correlation with exercise capacity were A velocity, F/A ratio, RV, RV/TLC.
Conclusion: A decrease in early diastolic filling velocity, an increase in late diastolic filling velocity, and F/A ratio, were significantly related to decreased exercise capacity with aging. Increased residual volume was also related to decreased exercise capacity. The results suggest that left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and subclinical emphysema are involved in the decline of exercise capacity with aging in healthy adults.
